Driving with a trailer
Follow the Norwegian rules
Here we will only give a few tips on what is also important to remember when driving with a trailer.
When lifting trailer on to the car it is important that you use proper techniques, see “Heavy lifting».
Everything loos on the trailer must be attached firmly with cargo straps.
When you have load attached with cargo straps you should stop after you have driven a bit to check that everything is properly tightened. This is because when one starts to drive the cargo may move and cargo straps can therefore be loosen.
If there are many small items in the trailer you need to use a tarpaulin or net to cover over so nothing falls off.
If one has a heavy load so you must ensure that the weight is evenly distributed so that the rear of the car is not being pushed down or lifted up.
Always use a safety wire that is attached between the vehicle and the trailer.
When driving with a trailer where there are people and especially children, one should always look extra carefully in the mirror so no one jumps between the trailer and the car.
When driving with a trailer when it is ice / snow outside the car will need extra-long time to stop because of the trailer pushes the car forward.
- NB! Remember that the weight of the trailer ball shall not exceed 75 kg.
- Do not attempt to connect the trailer if it is on a slope. It can begin to roll, and if you have loaded it, you will not manage to keep it from rolling.
- Ensure that the glove (part of the trailer that you mount on the towing ball) engages when you connect the trailer on. If not, you risk that the trailer falls off when you start driving.
- If the trailer has brakes, remember loosen the handbrake before driving. Remember to check the wheels when you start driving. If the trailer have had the break on for a long time, the break may be jam and the wheels will not roll. One trick is to reverse the trailer to get the wheels loose.
- Check that there is air in the tires.
- Never carry more weight than what the trailer and the car are approved for.
- Take the jockey wheel completely up so that it does not hit speed bumps or similar when driving.
- Make sure all limbs are properly mounted on.
